The 2nd Amendment

The Bill of Rights was adopted in 1791.  The Second Amendment says “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

In 1838, Abraham Lincoln said in his Lyceum Address: “All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years.  At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected?  I answer.  If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad.”  Was Lincoln referring to the now controversial second amendment?  That we will never know.  Lincoln was assassinated 27 years after he uttered those words.

Fast forward to this week’s news, Republican congressmen were shot by a disgruntled American, not by a terrorist from the Middle East, not by a Muslim in America, but by a white middle-aged American living out of a white cargo van.  The same Republicans who have fought gun control laws found themselves at the wrong end of an assault rifle.

“both the United States and Yemen were distinct from the other countries surveyed in viewing firearm ownership as a basic right of civilians and in having more permissive regimes of civilian gun ownership.  In the remaining countries included in the sample, civilian firearm ownership is considered a privilege and the legislation governing possession of firearms is correspondingly more restrictive.” (Gun Control)

What is it saying when America is ranked beside Yemen?  Here are some states and their corresponding gun control law:

Open Carry?
May carry openly without permit/license.
May carry openly without permit/license.
No laws against open carrying long guns.
May carry openly without a permit in a vehicle or on foot.
May carry open or concealed without permit as long as you are a citizen of the U.S. or a lawfully admitted alien,
New Hampshire
Handgun open carry without license
May carry openly without permit/license.
May open carry without a permit if 18 years or older.

I lived in Kentucky for 7 years.  I went to a pawnshop for real but affordable jewelry.  I found the jewelry on the left side of the room, on the right were guns with prices on them.  An automatic pistol cost $200, cheaper than a cellphone, an AK47 cost $700.  One can wage war for a thousand bucks!  As Lincoln said “the approach of danger… spring up amongst us.”

Isaiah 2:4 "He will render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples.  They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears.  Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore."

Stephen Paddock, another middle aged white man with no terrorist connections and no apparent motive, fired semi-automatic weapons into a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas, on October 1, 2017.  Fifty nine were killed and 514 were injured.
